Gates Announces Technology Grants for Higher Ed with K-12 Grants Coming Next Year

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation announced today a new initiative called the Next Generation Learning Challenges. The initiative, backed by $20 million from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, is designed to promote the innovative development and use of technology at the college level, especially in the area of online learning. Grants to be awarded will range from $250,000 to $750,000 each. Some of the initial funds will be used to bolster online courses at the college level.

For those educators in K-12 education, take notice: though the grants for the Next Generation Learning Challenges will be awarded in 2010 to collegiate programs, funds will be available for K-12 proposals early in 2011. Put on your proverbial thinking cap and get your creative juices flowing. Here's your chance at some major funding for a unique, creative proposal involving educational technology with an emphasis on online learning and sharing. When full details are made available, I will post them here.

Happy thinking!

Very interesting concept this is of getting a grant to get technology at a school. I am in Cleveland, Ohio, where sometimes in the schools, there are computers and no internet, or the computers are so old and slow. The programs are outdated. Right now the district is so worried about laid off teachers that the whole 21st century school idea has fallen by the wayside...
